Well, that's a relief...
I had a somewhat in-depth conversation today with an engineer who specializes in environmental remediation (rebuilding polluted wetlands, etc.). She poleaxed me…
CHECK THIS SHIT OUT: In the U.S., the oil industry successfully lobbied to keep raw petroleum off the Federal Government’s list of hazardous substances when the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), was enacted in 1976.
I looked. It’s not on the list.
The same is not true in other countries, by the way.
So the good news is, there’s no problem in the Gulf of Mexico right now…there’s nothing hazardous in the water. And the entire EPA response is guided accordingly.
Fuck me to tears.

I have an idea...
…let’s go 5,000 feet under the sea, then let’s burrow another 25,000 feet through the earth’s crust to suck out toxins that were buried millenia ago in a process which tied up enough atmospheric carbon dioxide to allow animal life to exist on earth.
Then, let’s sell those toxins to the highest bidder!! …but first, let’s talk to Cheney in private to make sure that in our US operations we don’t have to put in an acoustic switch backup system to activate the BOP from a remote boat – like we have to do in all those other pesky countries.
We’ll make a bloody KILLING!!!!
